The Charente Maritime is one of the most beautiful parts of France for a wedding. Rolling vineyards, warm summers, golden afternoon light and more stunning chateaux than you could visit in a lifetime. If you are dreaming of getting married in France, this region deserves to be high on your shortlist.
I am Susie Mae, a certified celebrant based in the Charente Maritime, and I work with couples from all over the world who choose this magical corner of France for their wedding day. Here is my honest, practical advice for anyone considering a chateau wedding here.
Why the Charente Maritime?
The Charente Maritime sits on the south-west Atlantic coast of France, bordered by the Charente to the south and the Vendée to the north. It includes the beautiful Île de Ré, the historic city of La Rochelle and an extraordinary number of private chateaux, many of which are available for exclusive-use weddings.
The region enjoys some of the sunniest weather in France outside the Mediterranean south, with warm, dry summers and relatively mild conditions even into early autumn. For outdoor ceremonies and al fresco celebrations, it is very hard to beat.
The expat community here is substantial too, which means there is an established network of English-speaking wedding suppliers. Caterers, florists, photographers and planners who understand exactly what international couples need are easier to find in this region than in many other parts of France.
What to Look for in a Chateau Wedding Venue
Not all chateaux are created equal, and it is worth doing thorough research before you fall in love with a beautiful photograph.
Capacity is the first thing to check. Some chateaux are visually stunning but genuinely quite small inside, which creates problems for larger wedding parties. Ask for indoor capacity separately from outdoor capacity, because the weather cannot always be relied upon even in a Charente summer.
Catering arrangements vary enormously. Some venues have in-house catering; others require you to bring your own caterer. If you have strong ideas about your wedding food, make sure the venue’s arrangements will work for your vision.
Guest access is also worth thinking through carefully. Many chateaux are in rural locations with limited public transport. If you have guests arriving from overseas or from towns without cars, you will need to think about transfers and getting everyone safely home afterwards.
The ceremony space itself is something I always check carefully when I visit a venue. Is there a dedicated outdoor spot? Is it sheltered from wind? Does it have natural light and a beautiful backdrop? And crucially, where will your guests sit and will they be able to see you properly? Depending on both the time of day and the time of year you are getting married, if your ceremony is outdoors, consider whether there is shade available for you and your guests during the ceremony. If there isn’t natural shade, check whether the venue can provide it with large umbrellas or similar cover. It can get incredibly hot in France during the summer, and you don’t want your guests (or yourselves) becoming unwell or fainting in the heat.
The Legal Side of Getting Married in France
This is the part that surprises many couples, so I want to be clear about it.
In France, for a marriage to be legally recognised, the ceremony must take place at the local Mairie and at least one of the partners needs to have French residency. This means that a celebrant wedding in France, however beautiful and meaningful, is a celebratory ceremony rather than a legally binding one.
The good news is that this is completely manageable. Most couples either get legally married at home before their French celebration, or arrange the legal element at the Mairie if one of them is a French resident. Your celebrant ceremony is then exactly what you want it to be: personal, symbolic and completely yours, with no form-filling or bureaucracy in sight.
I can walk you through the legalities in detail and help you figure out which approach suits your situation best.
Working With a Celebrant for Your Chateau Wedding
A chateau setting deserves a ceremony that truly matches it. And that means something that has been properly crafted, properly rehearsed and properly delivered.
As a local celebrant who knows the Charente Maritime well, I can visit your venue in advance, advise on ceremony choreography and seating, liaise with your venue team and all your other suppliers, and create a ceremony script that is entirely unique to you and your love story.
I love working with couples who are drawn to the grandeur of a chateau but who also want their ceremony to feel genuinely intimate and personal. The two things are absolutely not mutually exclusive. In fact, the contrast between the magnificent setting and the deeply human ceremony is often what makes these weddings so extraordinary.
If you are starting to think about a chateau wedding in the Charente Maritime and you would love to chat about your ceremony, I would be absolutely delighted to hear from you.
